A Family Story

One Family’s Experience of Working with a Doula

Thanks to Amanda, Craig, Karen and Ella for sharing their story of birth in pictures, video clip and words. Amanda is a first-time mother with a rare medical condition. Craig is a happy husband and proud father, Karen is a loving grandmother and Ella is the precious baby at the centre of the story. In their own words the family explain why they used a Doula and how their Doula made a remarkable difference in the birth experience for all family members.

Amanda’s Reflections

Amanda’s story is told in detail in the video clip but she highlights two reflections:

“Chris’s part in my labour was amazing, supportive, and respectful. She was my rock and helped me to stay as focused as my body allowed.”

“Having a Doula ensured that my spouse received advice and information that in turn helps the mom. For example, Chris helped Craig by giving suggestions about affirmations to tell me in labour. Working with Chris helped encourage Craig in his abilities to help me through labour.”

Craig’s Thoughts

1. There’s a common thought in society that a Doula is not necessary if a woman has a husband or partner supporting her during labour. What are your thoughts about this?

I feel that a Doula has this job for a reason. You go to school and do your research to provide the best possible and natural way for women to give birth with the least number of complications. When you share your learning with me I am more able to stay focused and help my wife through her labour.

2. How was my service helpful to you as Amanda’s husband?

You provided books to help me understand what Amanda is going through and suggested techniques and provided herbal supports to make her delivery of our baby more comfortable, relaxed and less stressful.

3. What thoughts do you have to pass on to other women/couples who are thinking about working with me during their pregnancy and birth?

My advice to other men or partners is that a Doula will make your pregnancy and your life smoother with less stress. You don’t need to worry that the choices you and your wife/partner made are going to fly out the window. The Doula will discuss material with you so that you have a better understanding of what you will be going through. I feel that a Doula is an awesome help in your life as you bring a new little person into this world.

4. Is there anything else that you’d like husbands/partners to know about working with a Doula?

A Doula is not only someone extra to help, instead of family, but a friend as well. They are there for your family in your special time with great advice and knowledge to help you through it all.
